The Boss

Devils and Dust releases today. Bruce Springsteen was on NPR yesterday singing, "Jesus was an only son . . . " and Ashley, my eleven-year-old, asked me who that was singing. "The Boss," I replied, thinking how sad it is yet how fun it is to be able to introduce her to some of the music before her time that endures today.

"Who's that? Is he a country singer?"

"No, well, he sings a lot of things, but he's a famous rock singer, one of the best, the Boss."

So I called her in this morning because they said he'd be singing on the Today show, but they keep stringing us along and Ashley has to go to school without hearing from the Boss this morning.

One of the best things about the Boss is that he is a lyrical, melodic storyteller as well as a strong songwriter and musician.

And he seems to have a heart for the poor.

Reminds me of Someone.

For those online right now, Springsteen just played "Devil's and Dust" on the Today show and it was incredible. For a man to conceive of, write, perform two instruments simultaneously and sing is awesome. He's performing second song now. Yesterday he performed "Jesus was an only son" on NPR . . .

Did you catch "Storytellers" on VH1 Sunday night? It was great. I taped it and watched it last night. Cried during "Thunder Road" -- as always. Didn't know you were a Boss fan. I acquired "Darkness on the Edge of Town" in 1978 (as a 10th grader) and have been a huge fan. I've seen him six times in concert and am hoping he'll come ATL way later on in this tour. Wouldn't dream of missing him.

The Storytellers will rerun on VH1 at midnight (Central) tonight. Set your timer!

Greg - did you see this Slate article on Springsteen?

Faux Americana

I'm not trying to stir the pot...just wanting to point it out since it was timely.
